A bridge, not an interpreter
Sign To Text translates signs into text and speech through your camera, and turns typed or spoken words back into a signing avatar. It runs entirely in your browser.
Why it exists
India has millions of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people and very few certified interpreters. Everyday moments — a chemist counter, a ticket window, a clinic reception — often have no interpreter and no shared language. This is a small tool for those moments: free, offline after first load, and private by construction.
How it works
Camera → text
Hand tracking finds 21 landmarks per hand. Geometric rules match those against handshapes, which build into words you can read, translate and speak.
Text → signing
A 3D figure signs what you type or say. 220 words have their own sign; anything else is fingerspelled, as a signer would.
On your device
Frames are processed locally and never uploaded. There is no account, no tracking, and no server storing what you sign.
118 word mappings
Synonyms, plurals and verb forms route to the right sign, and articles are dropped — sign languages do not use them.
What it is not
It is not a certified interpreter and must not be used as one. The signs are approximations generated from handshape, location and movement — useful for learning and for simple exchanges, but not verified by a qualified Indian Sign Language interpreter. Facial expression and body shift carry grammar in sign languages, and this avatar reproduces neither.
Do not rely on it in medical, legal, police or emergency situations.
What would make it genuinely good
- Validation by Deaf signers. Every sign checked and corrected by people who use the language daily, and credited by name.
- A trained recogniser. Recorded ISL samples and a small model over landmark motion, replacing the geometric rules.
- Motion-captured signing. Real interpreters recorded, with facial grammar.
- Regional coverage. ISL varies between states and schools; one dialect is not enough.
