The camera will not turn on. Why?
Browsers only allow camera access over https, or on localhost. If you opened the file from your phone's downloads folder it will be blocked no matter what you allow. Use the hosted site. If it still fails, check that another app is not already holding the camera, and that you did not previously deny permission for this site.
Does my video go to a server?
No. Hand tracking runs inside your browser and frames never leave the device. Nothing is recorded or uploaded. The only network requests are for the page itself, the hand-tracking model, and — only if you configure one — a translation endpoint you choose.
Why does it spell some words letter by letter?
Words with no sign in the dictionary are fingerspelled. That is what signers do too, especially with names and places. As the dictionary grows, fewer words need spelling.
Why is a sign different from how I sign it?
Very likely because ours is wrong. The signs are generated approximations that have not been reviewed by an interpreter, and Indian Sign Language varies by region and by school. Tell us and we will correct it.
Can it understand full sentences from the camera?
Not yet. It reads one handshape at a time and assembles letters into words with suggestions. True word-level recognition needs a model trained on recorded sign motion, which is the next real step.
Speech input stops on its own.
It should not — recognition restarts itself until you press stop. If it still cuts out, the browser may have lost microphone permission, or you are on a browser without the Web Speech API. Chrome and Edge support it; Firefox and some in-app browsers do not.
Which languages does it speak?
Twenty-two, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese and Urdu. Voice availability depends on what your device has installed — if a language sounds wrong, install its voice pack in your system settings.
Can I type in Hindi?
Yes. Hindi and Marathi have a word list, and common phrases work in every supported language. Anything unmatched is transliterated and fingerspelled. Other scripts currently match common phrases only.
Is this a replacement for an interpreter?
No, and it must not be used as one. Do not rely on it for medical, legal, police or emergency communication. Those situations need a qualified human interpreter.
Can I use this in my school or NGO?
Yes, and please do. It is free and runs offline once loaded. If you are working with Deaf students, get in touch — feedback from actual signers is the most useful thing we can receive.
